Unit 5:Hypothesis
Definitions:
Claim: to test a claim we will start by stating the claims by writing the null and alternative hypothesis
Null hypothesis: the original claim
-generally stated as a equality statement
-state the hypothesis as a mathematical statement and in words describing the statement
Alternative hypothesis:what the researchers are trying to support
-generally stated as an inequality statement
-state the hypothesis as a mathematical statement and in words describing the statement
Conclusions: once the hypotheses have been stated we will state a procedure and perform calculations from the sample data.
-there are only 2 conclusions that we will make based on the sample data
-accepting/rejecting the null hypothesis
Accepting the null hypothesis: we are not saying it is true. We're saying that it could be true and that the results of our sample could have easily happened by chance
Writing a conclusion that accepts the null hypothesis:
-we will state there was insufficient evidence to support the alternative hypothesis
Writing a conclusion that rejects the null hypothesis:
-we are saying we support the alternative hypothesis. The results of our sample could not have easily happened by chance and therefore the original hypothesis is fake
One Proportion z-test:
1.Ho:p=po the population is equal to po
-Ha:p does not equal po the population is not equal to po
-make sure to not use mew in the symbols or use the word mean in the description
2. we use the 1 proportion z test procedure when testing a claim against a proportion, percent or fraction. we still need an indepenent random sample. the population must be at least 10x the sample size to use the formula for standard error. normality is confirmed by showing np,>10 and n(1-po)>10
3. test statistic=statistic-parameter(Ho)/standard error of the statistic

P hat= x/n
4. link the cconclusion the the p-value stated in step 3
-state that the data is significant or not if a level of significance is give (a)
-if no level of significance is given state the level of evidence
-do not write in terms of Ho
-Do write in terms of Ha
-always write conclusion in context

Power: chane we make the correct decision and reject the null hypothesis when a paticular alternative is true.
